Thanks Matt

Matt Goyer blogged about Goombah today. Extract:

Goombah, and it's predecessor, Emergent Music were both built because of our belief in 'The Long Tail' and niche music markets. The idea of niche music markets sounds great in theory, but how do you as an end user find your niche markets? That's where Goombah comes in. Of course I'm not a professional writer so I urge you to read Chris Anderson's Wired Magazine article, The Long Tail which does a much better job of explaining the concept:
Forget squeezing millions from a few megahits at the top of the charts. The future of entertainment is in the millions of niche markets at the shallow end of the bitstream.

Hi

All of a sudden everyone it writing and mentioning “The Long Tail” as the next big thing - or as a fact of life. Why?

Of course technology, internet and that kind of stuff gives new possibilities, but isn’t The long Tail about common sense? I think so!!

Best Regards

Well, to me it certainly seems like common sense. But if you talk to most record company execs, it not only won't seem like common sense, they'll totally deny that it's true. They're too used to a world in which there are a few megastars and no one else counts. They have become so acclimated to that distorted reality, which is really a side-effect of needing to use mass-marketing to publicize people, that they think it's the natural order of things. The goal of Goombah is to reduce the friction involved in word-of-mouth that it actually becomes a viable alternative to mass marketing.
